"The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want." Proverbs 21:5
"But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles....." Isaiah 40:31a
"Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD." Psalm 27:14
I could go on and on with the life verses that tell us to wait upon the
Lord. Those, especially in Proverbs, instructing us in the ways of
diligence and wisdom in our dealings. I was thinking all day yesterday
and the day before on the phrase "Wait upon the Lord." I have heard MANY
sermons and teachings on these verses, all of which, not wrongly I
might add, hinge on a more modern definition of the word "wait," such
as: "To tarry until another catches up." However, what God had laid on
my heart over the past few days was a different angle on the word
"wait." A more traditional meaning, like: "To wait on or upon, to
attend, as a servant; to perform menial services for; as, to wait on a
gentleman; to wait on the table." or "To pay servile or submissive
attendance." , "To attend to; to perform. To be ready to serve; to obey.
Psalm 25. Proverbs 20."
There is a big difference between the
two, and it solves the age-old inclination to ask "Well then, if we are
to wait, what shall we do while we are waiting?" It's not a matter of
waiting on God to catch up, it's a matter of waiting on Him, as in
serving Him. "Wait upon the Lord," even the terminology suggests the
same. Wait upon the Lord, serve the Lord, and HE will strengthen you as
you do so, and cause you to mount up on wings like eagles! Be diligent
in waiting, in serving, and not hasty. Haste makes waste, they always
say, and even biblically this is true. Wait on the Lord, for sure, but
also, wait UPon Him. ♥
