Proverbs 4:23-24
Keeping the Heart
"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of
life. Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from
thee."
* Froward defined:
"Perverse, that is, turning from, with aversion or reluctance; not
willing to yield or comply with what is required; unyielding;
ungovernable; refractory; disobedient; peevish; as a froward child."
*Perverse defined: "Obstinate in the wrong; disposed to be contrary; stubborn; untractable."
~ "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" Jeremiah 17:9
*The heart so desperately NEEDS keeping (keep defined: To preserve from
falling or from danger; to protect; to guard or sustain.) because alone
it is desperately wicked.
~ "O generation of vipers, how can
ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart
the mouth speaketh." Matthew 12:34
*Speech and actions are good indicators of the condition of the heart.
HOW THEN are we to tame or "keep" the heart?
~ "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are
honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure,
whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if
there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and
seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you." Philippians 4:9
